Romeo and Juliet's Production Design CCAD - Set

What's this that carves with deliberate ease slicing card into wondrous form, each cut a gentle persuasion
creating a life not yet seen. A lovers hold binds together conquering this what once was a blank piece of card. We had to recreate an area of the foyer at Cleveland College of Art and Design as part of some spatial design of which our final statue maybe situated.

A 3DS Max render of the CCAD Foyer

One of the Juliet mock up dolls and her home, the balcony of Verona where her love for her ill fated Romeo entwine in lovers verse. The balcony model was made from foam board. mount board with mirco mesh metal and wooden dowelling

Another design for our fair Verona where two star crossed lovers meet tragedy. The design was heavily influenced by steampunk cogs and clock work. Heavy metallic golds where used to convey affluence of the church. the scene unfolding on the alter where lovers breathe one last word to end this play of plays.

I thought it would be nice to but the digital model in a real world setting here it's composited into a real theatrical still.

And finally Juliet stands on her balcony of old Verona. The statue of prop, set and costume created by myself and the awesomenessness of Jessie Croft and Becky Degnan :)

What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet.

William Shakespeare's Steampunk Juliet - Costume Design

Starting our first project that we do breathe life into this fine affair, with toil and troubles, problems overcome to create life in our Juliet. Of Steampunk design she will shine brighter than olden stars kissed in Sir Williams golden words. Our first project at Cleveland College of Art and Design on the BA(HONS) Production Design Degree coarse. Romeo and Juliet meets Steampunk and British Youth Culture

Starting with a loose pencil sketch
Developing the design to add colour
Creating a mock up of one of the designs
Another mock up of one of my more favoured designs employing steampunk driven mechanical wings. Also showing some of the set design that the final statue will be sited on
Going back to the design process taking inspiration from other British designers to draw in the British Youth Culture elements. This design being influenced by the Architect Richard Rogers, tailoring his design ethic of inside out. The dress being fashioned by the what would be essentially the understructure of a Victorian dress, it's under cage
Taking the pencil design further by adding colour and referencing more of today's youth culture by using Katy Perry. The back ground is one of Richard Rogers commercial complexes which looks far more like an industrial power plant.

Give me my Romeo, and, when he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night,
And pay no worship to the garish sun.
